29 Mar On the menu, I order my day
The first hours of the day are precious, but to take awareness of it, one must yet to have good habits. Here are some rituals to resume control, gain in well-being and in productivity. Tested and approved!
The greatest entrepreneurs and leaders have taken the time to extensively write about the importance of their morning routine, and that is no accident: in our lives, the little changes forge big revolutions !
These atypical personalities are the ones who whispered to me about the good habits that follow, some have become regular in my daily life, others are more occasional. I hope they will inspire you as much as they have inspired me.
In fact, a good day starts the day before. Being well organized allows one to optimize their time, to gain in productivity and in personal satisfaction. Also in this area, lists are crucial! A glance at your agenda for your long-term programs and urgent task lists for the next day will help you wake up in sync with your goals.
You have certainly come across these articles praising the benefits of setting up your alarm at 5 o’clock in the morning. If you succeed, that’s perfect, you have the time to devote to good habits, you can move on to the next point. Although if that is not the case, stop with the guilt! Each of us have different sleeping needs, and if you’re a big sleeper, know that you are not excluded from these morning rituals! Simply shift your alarm 30 minutes earlier as to have some time for yourself. Deserves the experiment, right?
Concentrate on your day and your goals, not those of others. In other words, the little scroll you take on your favorite social network will have no positive impact on the hours that follow. Try to ban this reflex of looking at your phone after waking up. Even if it is to check your emails, for it has been proven: it creates anxiousness. You will feel a change in your state of mind.
If you are an early riser, why not take advantage of the time you have to incorporate positive practices into your daily life? You can try meditation, for example. There are mobile apps or free online sessions to get you started. You will feel more zen to start the day. You can also undertake the exercise of gratitude, by writing down every day what it is you are grateful for. This practice helps in building self-confidence and to anchor oneself in the present.
Get moving. It may sound easy to say but stirring your body helps in waking up your brain, all the while chasing out stress. If you do not have the time (in reality, you do not take the time) for a walk, a run or a visit to the gym, know that 15-20 minutes are enough to feel fresh and ready. Investing in an exercise bike, watching a yoga or stretching video on Youtube, these are simple and accessible ways to do a little exercise every morning.
A Norwegian shower is perhaps not the most pleasant of experiences, but it has the merit of … waking up. What better whiplash than a cool shower, especially when sunny days are back?
Breakfast is also an opportunity to sit around sipping tea or coffee and catch up on worldwide news if that is a requirement for your work, or even better, continue reading what it is you have recently taken into. This kind of ritual is soothing and can allow the mind to awaken to new ideas.
Now that you’re in top shape and just arrived at the office, remember this quote:
If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.
As you will have understood, the most difficult tasks should be done as soon as possible to:
1. avoid thinking about them later on (thoughts that pester you all day), and
2. because your morning energy will allow you to get rid of them faster.
At the end of the day, make an appraisal and prepare for the next day. Effective planning saves valuable time and allows one not scatter. Try to divide your tasks: the most important ones, those where you will need concentration, flow, and that will give you the satisfaction of a successful day, and the rest, the more superficial work. Then afterwards plan your day according to your energy (for the important tasks) and not to your time, according to the schedules where you are productive. The difference will be significant in your success.
This is a non-exhaustive list of morning routines that have proven their worth, now it is up to you to pick from said list according to your needs. How about you, what are your good habits to start of the day?
